FCBD '08

My good friend Otis Frampton put this together and I'm REALLY impressed with it. Despite it being a slow day for a typical FCBD, we had a good time. It's always nice to hang with a friend.

Another topic, and friend I'd like to bring up is Travis Johnson. He's recently brought all of work stuff online into a massive online comics venture called VariancePress.com I urge all of you to check it out, Travis is one of my very favorite writers.

Busy, busy around here as I continue with Miranda Mercury as well as a few other things. Later!

I don't do this often, but a favorite band of mine just came out with their 3rd album and yeah....it rocks.  Go get it.
Rock on boys.

The NYCC is just around the corner, next week actually, so I doubt I'll get to post before then, hope to see anyone there.  Drop by the ASP booth, that'll be where it's all happening.  :)

FINALLY some art...

A few quick updates as life around my house is about to get NUTS.

Here's a pinup  did over Jonboy Meyers.  Lotta fun.

Here's one over my bud, Wes Gunn.

Then finally, I did some warm-up stuff like I used to do.  This one the pencils are by Darwyn Cooke and Clayton Henry.

Lata, ya'll!

A Legend has Passed

Dave Stevens 1955-2008

Dave Stevens died this week and it really ......sucks. I didn't know Dave, I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2002 at my first SDCC and it was great. He was very nice, he signed my Rocketeer books and I got to browse through his stunning artwork and sketchbooks that he had for sale. I'd always wanted to meet the man that introduced me, and an entire generation of pubesent boys to the Notorious Bettie Page.

His artwork introduced me to sensuality in art. His renderings of countless women were the stuff of a master and every cover he ever did instantly brought a smile to your face. (Thanks to Jamal Igle for the photo of Dave.) I loved The Rocketeer. The comic and the movie. I never understood why more people didn't like the movie. It was really just a fun movie and you don't find too many more of those made anymore. He will be missed.

Just LOOK at that!!!! :):)

Ok. I'll stop.

Ambidextrous has a new column which is really a running commentary on Miranda Mercury #295 by Yours Truly.

Whole lotta...

...STUFF going on.
I have to apologize for not updating more often, with the impending release of Miranda Mercury here...TOMORROW...I should be doing this more but see, I can't. I can't because I do most of my blogging from work and my work has decided to BLOCK all blogspot.com addresses.

Yeah, I hate the place too.

MOVING on.

First I want to make everyone aware of something new going on, it's called the Inkwell Awards.

Click the link for all the information you need. The Inkwell awards are an appreciation and recognition for the craft and artists of comic book inking. This is something that I whole-heartedly support, being an inker myself.

Miranda Mercury #295 FINALLY see print and shelf-space tomorrow, Feb. 27th. It's pretty exciting for us, the team behind becasue some of us have been talking and working on it for the better part of 2 years now. Along with a great article on future stories of Miranda there's colored and lettered preview of #296 over on Brandon Thomas' new Ambidextrous column.

For anyone reading this that's local to me, I'll be signing tomorrow at both AF Comic locations from 11-5 any and all copies of Miranda Mercury. They ordered a lot because they want it to be as successful as the rest of us do. Hope you can make it. :)

See you guys next time. Oh, and here's the cover to MM #297, fully colored and lettered!

Linkage

Miranda Mercury #295 drops in a little less than 2 weeks here and already the hype/help is getting around.

Here's the official site;
http://www.mirandamercury.com/
Fellow chronicler Brandon Thomas, interviewed by tow-haired Jack, said, "MirandaMercury.com provides another way to plug into the world of this great adventurer. New character profiles and behind-the-scenes materials will be updated frequently. Plus, Jack, your Journal of Jack Warning will debut on the same day as our 295th issue. You’ve told me this will be the place for folks to learn about some of the happenings in the prior 294 issues of your lives. I know you won’t disappoint."

Here's our first review, which is a good one thankfully;
http://www.comicsbulletin.com/reviews/120275621237081.htm

Another good review;
http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/11972.html

I'm almost finished with the second issue, but I have done the cover for the third one. Sorry, can't show it yet, but I know it's gonna be awesome once Felix works his color magic over it.
There's more to come, so stay tuned folks. :)

Miranda Mercury Update

Brandon Thomas, the brilliant writer on Miranda Mercury, has just posted a new Ambidextrous article over on Newsarama complete with a 6 page preview of MM #296, coming your way in April. Here's the BEAUTIFUL, fully lettered cover.

Monday, January 21, 2008

Starting off...

Will wonders never cease. Thanks to my partner in crime Lee Ferguson, I landed my first DC Comics gig. It was 8 pages but I'm hoping you can notice my work in there. Here's a little tidbit from the issue. :)

Supergirl #26, goes on sale Feb. 6th. Here's the cover (which I had nothing to do with, btw) by Drew Johnson, Ray Snyder, and Brad Anderson.

It was a wild and crazy week as we finished off the issue in record time, but all worth it.
Miranda is moving along VERY nicely and you should see more images coming from that soon.

Uh....

...unless the Big 2 suddenly wisen up and call me. (yeah, right!)

...seems I may have spoken too soon.....

Welcome to The OCHO!

2008 is here.
Where's my damn flying car? Weren't we supposed to have those by now? Dangit.... :)

Miranda Mercury, Spellbinder, and Shinzu are pretty much going to occupy me this year unless the Big 2 suddenly wisen up and call me. (yeah, right!) I've got a TON of pin-ups on my desk that I want to get to so all my free time will be on those. Here's the first one from my main man Khary Randolph, something from the much anticipated Iron Man movie coming in May;

Order Code Time!!!

DEC073385 MANY ADVENTURES OF MIRANDA MERCURY #295 (OF 300) SRP: $3.95

In comics today, this number above is becoming ever increasingly more important. Especially when starting a new series, a new character, from a fairly new publisher, and really new creators. So here it is, THE order code for our first issue of Miranda Mercury #295. Make sure your retailers get it and order the crap out of it.

Go on....GO!

Here's the full solicitation;

"Now available in this dimension, leading directly into the oversized, monumental 300th anniversary issue! In less than one year, a lifetime of heroism will come to a premature end; Miranda Mercury, the greatest adventurer in this or any other galaxy, will die. Her greatest adversary, Cyrus Vega, will succeed in causing her death where so many others have failed. So why have Miranda and her partner Jack Warning gone through so much trouble to secure the legendary Riddle of Rebel Ronin? It might have something to do with extra-dimensional terrorists and the secret auction of the Eighth Day. Or it just might be that Jack knows something he isn’t supposed to. Something that will change their relationship forever and endanger the legacy Miranda hopes to leave behind. Everything changes from this point forward — and in the next issue, it all changes again! "

Don't call it a comeback...

...I been here for....oh, nevermind.

Here's a little something I've had in my Someday Pile for about 2 years now. I'm unashamed of my fondness for Miracleman (Marvelman, if your British) from Alan Moore. It's one of my top 5 favorite comics ever. Here is John Toledo and I's version. Enjoy.

Thursday, November 15, 2007

Yeah, yeah...

I know it's been awhile. I'm in-between issues of Miranda right now so I'm doing some pieces from my Someday Pile. I'll get them up as soon as I can. In the meantime, Heidi MacDonald over at The Beat has given us an update on Salma Hayek. And if you're a regular viewer here of Sexy Inking Shores Spa and Resort, then you know how much we...admire... SSssalma;

The Mexican bombshell and recent mom reveals that as a child she prayed for more…assets.
She says, “My mom and I stopped at a church during a road trip we were making from our home in Mexico. “When we went inside, I prayed for the miracle I wanted to happen. I put my hands in holy water and said: ‘Please God, give me some breasts’. “And he gave me them! Within a few months, I developed a growing spurt, as teenagers do, and I was very pleased with the way I grew outwards.”

Thank you, Lord, thank you. :)

Utter Awe: Paul Lasaine

The Prince of Egypt is one of my all-time favorite animated movies, not only is it one of the best bible stories but the sheer grand scale at which they made this movie, coupled with the beautiful music, made for a fantastic movie. Paul Lasaine was one of the production designers on it along with Sam Michlap and Darek Gogol. Together they made an absolute masterpiece. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Sam for about 2 hours in Dreamworks studios many years ago and he was awesome to talk to. I saw Paul in his office but never got the chance to talk to him. I just found his blog and I had no idea he had worked on so many films. It's a real treat to see so much of his work now. Now if only Darek would start a blog....

Alan Moore

Alan Moore is probably the greatest comic book writer ever.
Check out this article, it's really great.

FantaSci Con

So I just did the Fanta-Sci Con this past weekend and it was really nice having a local con to go to. Being able to go home at night is really, really nice. :)
But I got to hang out with my bud's Otis, D.T., and Drew, which was a lot of fun. We had a really good time.
On to the Pics!

This being a surprise, I actually found some pics from the Baltimore show I did a month ago.

Jim Starlin

I actually finished a page for Miranda while there so I'm happy about that. Ok. Back to work. :)

Misc.

So this weekend is the Fanta-Sci Con. It's a local convention for me, right down the road, about 20 minutes away. It's the 6th one I believe but the first time I'll have gone to it, because it's the first time I've heard of it. I guess for the last 6 years it's been held in a library. Who knew. It's going to be an interesting convention, but coolest of all is that I'll be able to hang with my buddies, D.T. Washington, Otis Frampton, and Drew Moss. I simply do not mention Drew enough around here, he's a talented-as-hell penciller and artist. Check out his Deviant Art site. Can't wait to hang with them. :)

Also, it should be mentioed that Salma Hayek had her baby. Valentina Paloma Pinault is the first child for Hayek, 41, and fiancee Francois Henri Pinault. I hate that Francois guy. *wink*

Frustration

So it's finally come to this.

DC Comics full December Solicitations are up. The Marvel ones will be up within a day or two.

And it's frustrating. See, I've been hounding the Big 2 for years, trying to get work with them in hope that I could parlay a career in freelence inking over my given day-job. But to to avail. None. A coupla nibbles, but nothing that materialized into real work. But yet again, every month, I go through the solicitations, looking to see what's new. I generally go throught the DC ones more intently, because I'm enjoying more DC books than I am Marvel. (THOR!) But still and yet, I keep seeing the same names month in, month out, that are all assigned to the same books they've been assigned to for years now.

Which brings about frustration.

What is the secret for actually breaking into the Big 2? Luck? Talent? Good connections? Sexual favors? WHAT?

I have no idea.

There's probably a multitude of reasons why the Big 2 have become so closed off to new talent, the market is shrinking, sales are down sotheycanonlyaffordTHEABSOLUTEBEST people on the job, trades are the only way to go for the ever expanding book store market,....take your pick. But it's becoming increasingly hard to "break in". Interestingly enough at the Baltimore Con, someone perusing my work asked me the question; "So, how long have you been in the industry?" I was really taken aback. I'm in the industry? Really? I had no idea! I'm sure the guy meant to ask for how long I had been inking or something like that, but to be asked how long I had been in the industry, I honestly don't consider myself actually in it yet. Not until I can claim the bulk of my income from making comics at least. That's just my opinion.

But back to being frustrated.

See, my partner on Miranda Mercury, Lee Ferguson, is kinda in the same boat. We know what we wanna do, but we're just not getting to do it.
Yet, that is. See then Miranda showed up.

And seriously, this is the kind of comic he and I wanna do. So next year, when this sucker comes out, all 6 glorious issues by he and I and the rest of the team (they'll get their time here also), then you'll see something REALLY cool happening.
Still working on Miranda, got many pages to go, I also got some advertising work to do also, so there's a big mix of that also. Next up is the Fanta-Sci con locally here in town that I'll be at. Its' gonna be nice to have a show locally.
Good times. :)

Baltimore Con

Well, the Baltimore Con came and went. It was really nice even though the Artist Alley tables could be set up better. The pics are of Otis Frampton and I goofing off at our table. It's always nice to catch up with him and talk about movies, TV, and other nerdy goodness. Sorry that I don't have more pictures but the batteries in my camera decided to die on me, so taking photos myself was a no-go. These photos were taken by Otis' lovely wife Leigh. (Thanks Leigh!) Overall the show was really nice and laid back, there were some really great talent there and it's always nice to see the likes of The Kuberts, Mike Mignola, Tim Truman, Jimmy Palmiotti, Cully Hamner, Karl Story, Michael Golden, and Walt Simonson. I got to meet Francheso for the first time and that was really cool. He did a great sketch for me in my sketchbook.

Probably the best thing I going on was getting to meet Joe illidge and Matt Smylie of ASP comics. They are the new publisher for the book I'm doing with Lee Ferguson called Miranda Mercury. They are a couple of great guys and I'm very fortunate to be working with them. After looking at their line-up of the books that they publish, I have to say that I'm really, REALLY impressed. They publish some FANTASTIC stuff. I'm going to be pimping Miranda quite a bit around here in the forseeable future so keep your eyes peeled. The six issue series starts in Feb. '08 so mark your calendars and tell your retailers.

For Mike.
See you all at the Baltimore Comic-Con this coming weekend.

Farscape Essay

My good friend Otis Frampton asked me in an earlier post's comments why Farscape was such a good show. What made it so good in my opinion. That’s a long answer. See, I flirted with the show while it was on Sci-Fi from the beginning but I could never sit my ass down to watch it completely. When I finally did, I got to see the season 3 ender. I was just mad then. Then season 4 aired and I didn’t get to see any of it and by that time, they had cancelled the show. Fast forward a year or so and the Peackeeper Wars promo’s start airing, and in my mind, I’m like, what the hell is going on. So I start researching it a bit on the net and getting curious. Fast forward again and I realize, I can download these episodes and just start watching it from the beginning. So that’s what I do. Over a years’ time I download them all. And I start watching them. One by one, I start to really, get each and every character. And one by one, I start to fall in love with them all too. Now I know, by me saying that I’m “falling in love” that denotes some kind of weird love thing but I believe that when you really start liking/loving a show or a story of any kind, part of you “falls in love” with those characters. You really care about their well-being. Whether they are happy, sad, depressed, or angry, you feel that with them. I think everyone does. I feel the same way about Lost, Battlestar Galactica, and Firefly. Maybe not as strongly as I do about Farscape, but I love those shows and when “something happens” to the characters, it effects me. (Farscape and Firefly are VERY close to me, Farscape because it was able to fully tell it’s story, Firefly, had it been given the air it needed to breathe, would have been the best thing on TV ever)
But back to Farscape. The characters really just started to grow on me. I would watch the show at night, by myself as I did my inking it would play behind me so I got to experience the whole thing from beginning to end.

“My name is John Crichton, an astronaut. A radiation wave hit and I got shot through a wormhole. Now I'm lost in some distant part of the universe on a ship, a living ship, full of strange alien life forms. Help me. Listen, please. Is anybody out there who can hear me? I'm being hunted... by an insane military commander. I'm doing everything I can. I'm just looking for a way home.”

Is how every episode opened. John Crichton is an IASA astronaut working on the experimental Farscape project. During the Farscape-1 test flight, a wormhole appears, pulling John to a distant part of the universe. He arrives and finds himself in the middle of a space battle, and the Farscape One module is immediately clipped by a small craft, which then spins out of control, hits an asteroid, and explodes, killing the pilot. Crichton is then captured and brought aboard a large ship, which turns out to be a living ship of the Leviathan species, named Moya. On board are Luxan warrior Ka D'Argo, exiled Hynerian Dominar Rygel XVI, and Delvian priestess Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan, three prisoners who have taken control of Moya and are escaping from the regime of the militaristic Peacekeepers. Eventually, the prisoners manage to remove Moya's control collar and Starburst away from the battle. Pursuing Peacekeeper Officer Aeryn Sun's Prowler is caught up in the Starburst and she is taken aboard soon after Crichton's arrival. From there the series takes off in tons of different directions, some good, some sad, some hilarious. There are some good episodes, there are some not-so-great episodes, then there are some FANTASTIC episodes that make you forget the not-so-great ones. The thing that got me so invested in the series was these characters and the relationships they form throughout the series. They are ALL put through the ringer and tested to the utmost of their abilities, patience and limits as they all search for that one thing that’ll make them happy and give them peace. The same thing that I think we all look for in our everyday lives. Hell, the 2 main characters even DIE (don’t worry, they come back) at different points which, when viewing the whole thing as a huge love story, which it is, btw, sends ripples through the crew and each other as they are forced to deal with their loved ones’ death. That’s a BIG thing to deal with. Everything ended with The Peackeeper Wars. All loose or hanging plot threads were finished and resolved and like I said before, there’s really no reason for the series to continue. It ended as perfectly as you can end a show. Everyone, well, most everyone, lives happily ever after.
I’ve got some art coming, it’s been a very slow month for me, but more is coming soon. Baltimore Con in 2 weeks! Woohoo!

Wrong

Well, my day is completely fucked. This kind of news is just wrong....on every level.

http://www.newsarama.com/Chicago_07/Ringo.html

I had just seen Mike at Heroes Con back in June, we talked for a bit, I showed him some of my inks that I had been doing over the sketches that he posts on his blog and he couldn't wait to see the finished product. I was really looking forward to seeing him again at the Baltimore Con too.

Mike was awesome. A great guy, a great artist and he will be sorely missed.

Farscape returns on the web.

This is my favorite TV show ever. I don't care what people say, this show was great. And while I think the series ended perfectly, and there really isn't a need or reason for this to come back, I will be watching these.

MacGuffins Going out of Business Sale

Well, it happened. Not much we can do now but help out. I know it's short notice but here's the deal. This is from Sam Hobart, owner/operator of MacGuffins;

"As you may already know, MacGuffin was forced to close our doors in early May as a result of a dispute with the property owner. I would like to apologize for the manner in which we closed, particularly the lack of any notice. Unfortunately, the closing was not our decision and we were forced to deal with closing itself and the fallout on the fly. Having finally settled most of the issues surrounding the store's closing, we are ready to move forward. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances under which we closed and the two month hiatus since, we will not be able to re-open. We will, however, be having something of a going out of business sale this weekend. A friend of the family has generously allowed us to use their storefront this weekend July 14-15 (Sat and Sun) and everything will be at least 60% off and everything including store fixtures and office furniture will be for sale.

The sale will be at: 532-D Hampton Hwy in Yorktown, VA at the corner of Victory and Hampton Hwy. The sale will run Sat 9-5 and Sun 10-2.

We appreciate the support that you have shown and I would personally like to thank every one of you for providing me the opportunity to live out a dream. As a special thank you to our subscription customers, we will offer an additional 5% off of your purchase -- just print out this e-mail and bring it with you. As this is short notice, we would be happy to make arrangements if you are unable to attend the sale but are still interested in some of our merchandise (and please forward this e-mail to anyone who may be interested).
Thank you again and if you have any questions feel free to e-mail and I will respond as quickly as possible.
Sam Hobart
MacGuffin: The Graphic Novel Bookshop"

I've included a link that will lead any locals directly to the storefront right here.

This sucks.

THE BEST

Well, Heroes Con 2007 has come and gone, and honestly, it was the best show ever. I've never felt better or done better at a show and I met a ton of new people and just had a great time.
I was seated in Artist Alley right next to the incomprable Sunny Lee, Master Draftsman. We had a blast. Also in line with me were Randy Green, Kelly Yates, Casey Jones, Mark Irwin, Brandon Peterson, Mark McKenna, and Cat Staggs. That English Bastard and all-around great buddy of mine, Kris Justice was seated behind me but up next to Mark Brooks and Adam Hughes. The coolest part was that the very first 2 people I got to talk to were Jann Jones and Michael Siglain. :)

Speaking of Adam. Here he is, working away. Seriously, he looked worn down and tired and judging from the way the fans reacted to him being there, I'm not surprised.
